Methodology
The transparency score
Every clinic gets a score from 0 to 100, built only from facts anyone can check. It measures how transparent and verifiable a clinic is, not the quality of its medical care, which we can't judge.
| Criterion | Points |
|---|---|
| Prices on record | 30 |
| AAHA accredited | 20 |
| Texas license verified | 15 |
| Website, phone & hours published | 15 |
| Fear Free certified | 10 |
| Emergency / 24-hour care | 10 |
Grades: A 80+, B 60–79, C 40–59, D 20–39, F below 20. A fact we haven't verified yet counts as zero and shows as "Unknown". That's a gap in our data, not a mark against the clinic. Clinics can send us documentation to fill gaps.
Where the data comes from
- Clinic locations: OpenStreetMap (ODbL), plus clinics we add by hand.
- Prices: price lists clinics publish on their own websites (linked and dated on every row), plus prices pet owners submit, which we review before publishing.
- Accreditation: checked against the AAHA hospital locator and the Fear Free practice directory.
- Licensing: checked against the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.
We don't copy or store Google or Yelp ratings. Each clinic page links to its Google listing so you can read reviews there.
Cost guides
Ranges show the lowest and highest price on record. The median uses the midpoint of each clinic's range. Guides with fewer than 3 prices are marked as still collecting and hidden from search engines until we have enough data.
Independence
VetScorecard is supported by advertising. Advertisers and clinics have no say in scores or which prices appear.
